Abstract:
Point feature GIS layer of religious worship places in Wyandotte County, KS. Site location addresses were compiled using city directories, and geocode-linked to real estate parcels in GIS software, and subsequently each geocoded location point feature was manually placed in center of church or temple main structure as evidenced by aerial imagery. The 264 worship places in this dataset include those of all denominations as listed in public directories. Attribution includes basic information about name, address, city, zip, phone contact number, and website URL, if available.

Dataset developed to provide a comprehensive worship places GIS layer to supplement other cultural features available to the Unified Government's Enterprise GIS. Recommended for mapping at 1:1200 scale and smaller.

Believed high based on reliable source information
One point feature per church location. Point was centered inside main church building outline as evidenced by CAD-derived building footprint layer and 2008 aerial imagery. In cases where source information listed two church organizations per address, only one church name was attributed and the other organization/church name was referenced in Comments field.
Based on reliable source information, this dataset is believed to be a reasonably complete set of active places of worship in the County. However, it is likely some churches may have been inadvertently left out, including either new or very small congregations.
No quantifiable accuracy is given. However, each point feature's location should fall within outline of its main building as observed in high resolution aerial imagery. Several steps were taken to ensure overall locational accuracy: a) comparing geocoded 'hit' address with published address of church b) checking ownership of property parcel to see if owner is a religious organization, and c) photo interpretation of buildings and grounds to confirm a church use of the property
Aerial orthophotography provided snapshot of ground conditions to compare and review features, and as a reference for feature digitization, with CAD-derived planimetric (building footprint) layer used as a primary source

Polk City Directory for Wyandotte County, KS was primary source material used in compiling list of churches and their addresses and phone numbers
Yellow Pages church listings served as a secondary source of information about churches. It was used to check cursorily against Polk Directory listings
Source information was used to compile church location addresses in a spreadsheet, which was then converted to DBF table. In the software, this address table was geocoded against a parcel points GIS layer. Good address matches were made in all but a handful of locations (which were later manually address-matched). However, 10 churches from compiled source information could not be confirmed and were dropped from this dataset as bad data. Resulting geocoded point file was then reviewed in the software record by record to verify veracity of site location and to move geocoded-parcel point to center of main church structure. Several steps were taken to ensure accuracy: a) evaluating geocoded hit address with published address of church b) checking ownership of parcel to see if owner was a religious organization, and c) photo interpretation of buildings and grounds to confirm a church use of the property. Also, spelling typos in attribution were corrected where found at this stage. X and Y coordinate attributes were also geometry-calculated in the software.
