Description:

Abstract:

An orthoimage is remotely sensed image data in which displacement of features in the image caused by terrain relief and sensor orientation has been mathematically removed. Orthoimagery combines the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. For this dataset, six inch pixel resolution natural color digital orthoimages were produced for Wyandotte County, Kansas. Tile orthoimages were mosaicked and reprojected to State Plane Coordinate System, Kansas North, NAD83 datum to produce 24-Bit RGB 0.5 foot pixel resolution digital orthoimages in Geo TIFF format. The entire County is presented in 652 overlapping, tiled images, based on the PLSS Quarter-Section Index. Digital Orthophotographs are orthorectified aerial photographs. In this data set all of Wyandotte County Kansas was flown at an altitude of 4800' AMT and orthorectified with a resolution of 0.5 feet.

The dataset was put through numerous proprietary quality control checks by Surdex Corporation to assure consistency and accuracy. All imagery is visually inspected for completeness to ensure that no gaps, or image misplacement exist in the edge matched image sheets. The ortho images may be derived by mosaicking multiple images, in order to ensure complete coverage. Photo coverage for the 100 scale orthophotos consists of 23 flight lines with a total of 900+/- exposures flown at an altitude of 4,800 feet. Overlap between each exposure is 60% with a 30% sidelap between flight lines. Downtown areas with tall buildings were flown east-west with 80% forward lap. Photography is natural color RGB. Dataset includes 652 TIFF image format orthophoto's with .tfw files for the 100 scale photography.

Process_Description:

The Digital Natural Color aerial imagery was acquired in Spring 2010 using a DMC sensor flown at a nominal height of 4800 feet AMT (Above Mean Terrain). Raw imagery post-processed as 8 bit color RGB using Intergraph's DMC PPS software. ABGPS data was also collected, supplemented by Ground Control using existing photo identifiable points (PID). The Digital Aerial Triangulation (DAT) was performed using softcopy workstations and Intergraph's ISPM software. Digital Elevation Models (DEM) (mass-points and break-lines) as well as existing Lidar DEM was used to support ortho imagery production. The images were then ortho-rectified and using Surdex Proprietary software. Color balancing was performed using Surdex Proprietary software. Seamless mosaicking was performed by automatic and manual seam line creation using Surdex Proprietary software. Images were quality controlled using Surdex Proprietary software. The seamless mosaic was clipped into tiles using Surdex Proprietary software. The imagery product deliverables are GeoTIFF images with embedded header information describing the required projection, pixel size, tile size and other related data and corresponding world files (.tfw).
