Abstract:
Line feature GIS layer of public park trails in Wyandotte County, KS.
Trail alignment centerlines in this dataset were captured (with few exceptions) by interpreting ground features on high resolution ortho aerial imagery, and should be used with caution in field conditions.
Published as an ESRI shapefile format, line vector layer, in US feet units in Kansas North State Plane coordinate system, NAD 83 datum
Companion public parks datasets are available : 1) park_bldg_py for building footprints (polygons) 2) park boundary layer (park_py), 3) plan line features like driveways, fences, etc (park_plan_ln), 4) plan point features like poles, light posts (park_plan_pt), 5) recreational facility polygons, e.g. tennis courts and ball diamonds (park_facility_py), 6) building point locations corresponding to park_bldg_py poly layer (park_facility_pt) 6) GIS annotation labels are available to complement park_py layer. Dataset developed as a supplemental cultural features layer for use in the Unified Government's Enterprise GIS. It is most useful for feature mapping at 1:7200 and larger scales.

Trail attributes are believed representative of characteristics of trails but have not been field verified or reviewed by the responsible public parks authorities
Line topology. No field work was performed to field-verify locations, with exception of Wyandotte Co. Lake Park Bridle Trail and Stotler Cove Nature Trail, which were GPS-located on site. Any trail, paved or unpaved, observable on high resolution aerial photography was captured. Where trails entered spots of dense woods and alignment was not clearly seen-- educated guess on location was made.
Believed to be a reasonably complete and thorough treatment of public park trails in county (as observed largely from aerial imagery)
No quantitative positional accuracy statement is made. Trail alignments were digitized as interpreted off aerial imagery and may be assumed to deviate from trails actual alignment by an indeterminate distance. For general mapping purposes this may be good enough.

In the GIS software, trail alignments were obtained through heads-up digitizing using high resolution ortho aerial imagery as a comparative overlay and verification source. Attribution was added: park name, surface type and trail use type. Mileage was calculated in GIS software from line segment lengths (feet to miles conversion).
